Raki: The Soul of Albanian Hospitality

The Spirit of Welcome

In Albania, every guest is greeted with raki. This isn't just a drink—it's a gesture of welcome, respect, and friendship that has been part of Albanian culture for centuries. At Bujtina Çupa, we continue this tradition with every guest who walks through our doors.

What is Raki?

Raki (pronounced "ra-KEE") is a clear, strong spirit distilled from fermented fruit. In Albania, it's most commonly made from grapes, though plum raki (rakia e kumbulle) and mulberry raki are also popular in certain regions.

Key characteristics:

  • Alcohol content: Typically 40-50%
  • Flavor: Clean, slightly fruity, with a warming finish
  • Color: Crystal clear when properly made
  • Serving temperature: Room temperature or slightly chilled
  • The Making of Raki

Traditional Albanian raki is made in autumn after the grape harvest. The process is often a family affair:

  • Fermentation: Crushed grapes are left to ferment naturally for 2-3 weeks
  • Distillation: The fermented must is heated in copper stills (called "kazanë")
  • Double distillation: Quality raki is distilled twice for purity
  • Aging: While often consumed young, some raki is aged in oak barrels
  • At Bujtina Çupa, we source our raki from local producers who still use traditional methods passed down through generations.

    Raki Etiquette

Understanding raki etiquette will help you connect with Albanian culture:

    The Toast

Before drinking, Albanians raise their glasses and offer a toast. Common toasts include:

  • "Gëzuar!" (Cheers!)
  • "Për shëndetin!" (To health!)
  • "Për miqësinë!" (To friendship!)
  • The First Sip

It's customary to take your first sip slowly—this isn't a shot to be gulped! Savor the flavor and show respect for your host's offering.

    With Food

Raki is traditionally served with meze (small appetizers) like cheese, olives, and cured meats. At Bujtina Çupa, we always offer accompaniments with our welcome raki.

    Moderation

While raki is strong, Albanians drink it slowly and socially. It's perfectly acceptable to sip one glass throughout an entire meal.

    Health and Raki

Albanians often claim raki has medicinal properties. While we can't make medical claims, it's true that Albanians have been using raki for centuries as a digestif and a warming drink on cold mountain nights.

A word of caution: Like all spirits, raki should be enjoyed responsibly. The high alcohol content can sneak up on you!

    Taking Raki Home

Want to bring the taste of Albania home? We can recommend local producers and help you purchase bottles to take with you. Just note customs regulations for your home country.
